Honeymoons are just the best, aren’t they? Breaking away to some far-off and usually exotic destination in the company of the one you love the most. But forget about beautiful Santorini and even the Swiss Alps, because there are some pretty amazing offbeat destinations to be explored by the out-of-the-ordinary couple. Like yourselves.

Atacama Desert – Chile

Located right alongside the great Pacific Ocean, Atacama Desert is a land of mystery and contrast. One of the driest deserts in the world, Atacama each year allows travellers to feast their eyes on one of nature’s purest anomalies because during the months of September through November, the desert becomes a flower wonderland.

As unconventional as it gets when talking honeymoons, Atacama Desert isn’t only home to some of the most glorious sunsets in the world, but also to views of the Andes changing colour every few seconds whilst the sun sets over the magnificent Moon Valley.

Cartagena – Columbia

There was a time when Columbia would not have qualified as tourism heaven, let alone a top honeymoon destination spot. But times have changed and the country’s tourism industry has grown by a marvellous 300% over the course of the last 12 years. Even so, Columbia doesn’t spring to mind as a honeymoon destination to too many couples, which is why Cartagena in particular, qualifies to make into onto our list of unusual honeymoon destinations.

Cartagena is a bright and visually stimulating cacophony of old village walls, villas adorned with bright paint and even brighter flowers. There’s an energy roaming the pebbled roads of Cartagena that is hard to describe to anyone who hasn’t actually experienced the town first-hand. Majestic cathedrals and blooming bougainvillea complete the perfect honeymoon picture.

The Little Karoo – South Africa

Forget about popular South African holiday destination Cape Town because it’s time to venture just a short distance further off the beaten path. South Africa’s Little Karoo is a mixture of unique wilderness in that it’s perfectly accessible and only a few hours’ drive from the country’s international tourism hub.

Not only is the Little Karoo home to some of the world’s most spectacular inland mountain passes, but it also offers to honeymooners a certain quirk and romance that is hard to find anywhere else. Nature-lovers are advised not to miss out on the local Big-5 Sanbona private wildlife reserve. The truly amazing bit about Sanbona; aside from the wide variety of fauna and flora indigenous to the region; is the fact that the reserve is roughly the size of Singapore!

Tokyo – Japan

Fancy yourself a bit of a world traveller and looking for other exotic options like when you play Aussie sports betting games? You haven’t travelled until you’ve travelled to Japan. Tokyo is one of our favourite to have made the list for top unconventional honeymoon destinations. This is the land of milk and honey and pure bliss for anyone with even just a remote interest in good food, mixology and/or artsy architecture.

Tokyo is also home to eighth-generation noodle counters. And for a honeymoon activity with a difference, be sure to check out the local tatami workshops.
